Last time, it had been Elisabeth Fiorelli to invite him to a bar, going so far as to rent out the entire establishment that they might gain a bit of privacy. He couldn't quite stop people from going to The Nimbus on a night like this one, but he figures his friend might appreciate an invitation for some quality time together nevertheless.[break][break]

It's not often that he comes to Mossdeep these days; with Chu-e Choi captured by the League and with his preference to meet with Lulu Flint elsewhere, it was rare business that brought him to the city.[break][break]

Perhaps that will change soon enough.[break][break]

He hasn't forgotten Walsh's promise to further conquer Hoenn.[break][break]

But he doesn't want to think about that right now. Their attempt to takeover Littleroot had ultimately FAILED in that aspect, though they'd been successful in securing knowledge and transportation to the energy source.[break][break]

"There you are!" He beams when he spots her, wearing his civilian guise and all its easy smiles. "Is this your first stop for the night, or have you have some fun without me?"

"Ah, mon ami, I would not dare see you anything less than sober after our last night drinking," Elisabeth replied with a bright laugh, pressing a Kalosian kiss to his cheek in greeting. Her face was flushed with winter's chill, roses blooming in her cheeks as she smiled at him. "I will have to pace myself better tonight, hm? Given mixed company."[break][break]

Only the slightest regret filled her at how shamelessly she'd gotten drunk in the underboss's presence at Howling; he had been surprisingly content to let her dissolve into her gin, going so far as to attend her cab ride home.[break][break]

"And you?" she asked, glancing around herself curiously. Half of her expected to see Tempest Quinn or Martín del Mar here. Maybe, she thought wildly, Rowan Wrynn or Lulu Flint -- though seeing proof of their familial relations in person would be odd, somehow.[break][break]

Finding no other familiar faces, she turned to Gavin with a cautiously delighted air.[break][break]

"Is this to be a special outing for just us, then?"[break][break]

The notion privately flattered her.

Gavin laughs, light, and flaps a hand as if to dismiss her concerns about their previous outing. He returns the greeting without hesitation, familiar with Kalosian custom so as not to be alarmed by the sudden closeness.[break][break]

"It was no trouble. I enjoyed our last outing."[break][break]

Even if it had ended with him escorting a very drunk Elisabeth home.[break][break]

"My third," he admits, still sober in spite of it. "I had drinks with Oscar and Mars earlier. But here? It's just us."[break][break]

They might see each other in Rocket meetings, but it was important to spend time with his friends individually and outside of work, whether those friends be Martín del Mar and oscar clayton or Elisabeth Fiorelli herself.

At his answer, Elisabeth's lips blossomed into a smile of unfettered joy that refused to abate; it seemed beaming when compared to the florist's natural state of aloof, distant politeness.[break][break]

"Then lead the way," she said, linking her arm in his. "I have never been here at the Nimbus before. Have you?"[break][break]

Despite having not yet ordered drinks, Elisabeth's excitement already lent itself to a chattier air, loosened up by the giddiness of the rarity of this outing. Times when her civilian life and Rocket life collided in a positive way were few and far between; it allowed her to be the person she most enjoyed being, with the people she most wished to be that person with.[break][break]

It was something she could neither articulate aloud, nor privately to herself. The happiness of it warmed her, nonetheless.

It's nice, Gavin thinks, to see her smile. She is radiant like this, a reflection of the woman she'd been in Kalos before her husband, before Rocket.[break][break]

"I haven't," Gavin admits, guiding them toward the bar. "I'm not in Mossdeep often, though I suspect that might change given recent circumstances."[break][break]

It's vague, but the shrewd Rocket admin would doubtless understand him to be referencing Walsh's promise to set their sights on the island city in the aftermath of the meteor and their attack on Littleroot. Gavin had gone so far as to move to Sootopolis in the interest of preparing for their seizure of the crater city; he would not do so here, for he's buried roots in a once-hated city and called it home.[break][break]

"Do you come to Mossdeep often? It's a beautiful city." Gavin orders two of the Nimbus' signature NEGRONI, handing one to Elisa. "The Space Center is a particular draw."[break][break]

And would be a wonderful asset for Rocket, should they be able to capture it.

"I used to," she confided, taking her seat beside him with a graceful ease. "I had a dear friend who once lived here, some time ago." Her heart tugged at her for a moment with memories of Georgette Bluebottle, a Gym Leader who had mercifully chosen to return to her family in Kalos just before the world turned upside-down.[break][break]

Privately, Elisabeth was grateful that her friend had left before the city was sieged. It erased complications.[break][break]

"Gin?" she said with a sudden laugh as the NEGRONI was handed to her. A devilish glint lit up her eyes. "You know me far too well. I will have to start finding ways to be less predictable, lest you get bored of my company."[break][break]

She hummed pleasantly as she took her drink, before her emerald eyes glanced over the glass rim at him.[break][break]

"I'm not surprised you care for the Space Center. You've always been more of a philosopher than you let on."

"I hope nothing ill has befallen them." Not for the sake of Georgette, who Gavin couldn't care less about as strangers, but for the sake of Elisabeth herself. She had a lonely air about her in spite of her many connections; he imagines very few of them to be dear, as she'd described. "Choi lives in Mossdeep. Or did, before..."[break][break]

Well, Elisabeth knew the events of Littleroot better than anyone, as head of Intel.[break][break]

"My sister, as well."[break][break]

With him. It still makes him angry if he dwells on it for long, though it's long since been absent of any heartache.[break][break]

"I doubt I could tire of you if I tried, Elisa." He lifts his glass in a silent toast, then downs a few sips. It's not his favourite drink, but it's well made. "I was a scientist, once. I'm sure you know."[break][break]

She had access to his Rocket file, after all; that of Gavin Merlino, at least. Only Walsh himself knew of the man behind the mask.

"Oh, nothing ill, no," Elisabeth said absentmindedly, fingers tracing the rim of her glass. "The Barrier lifted, and many chose to return to their home regions. She was one of them."[break][break]

She listened as he described the many other names that had brought Cillian Quinn here, to this city, and fondness and regret alike appeared to colour his expression.[break][break]

He did not seem so lonely to her, but he had a distance to him -- an aloofness, of sorts. Power did that to men, she always thought: the more power you had, the more distant you had to keep the world from you, lest someone seek to manipulate that power.[break][break]

It was a peculiar loneliness of its own. Perhaps that kinship of experience was what drew her so often to men in power, in some shape or form.[break][break]

"Do you miss being a scientist?" she asked, for that and many other reasons.

Gavin's shoulders relax from their previous tension, a laugh further breaking it as he takes another sip of his drink.[break][break]

"Not like I haven't thought about it myself."[break][break]

It's said in jest for one simple reason: he can never leave Rocket, not even if he'd wanted to. And I don't, Gavin thinks idly, glass clinking as he sets it back down.[break][break]

"Might not be anything left of home, if I'm lucky." There's a savage edge to his words. Perhaps Elisabeth Fiorelli had glimpsed prior animosity toward his parents when they'd spoke of his mother during their dance. "Perhaps Necrozma's done me a favour."[break][break]

He doesn't truly wish ill on Circhester; only on the demons who called it home.[break][break]

On science, he hesitates very briefly before offering a nod.[break][break]

"Sometimes. I involve myself where I can, through M.A.G.M.A and the like, but it's not the same as it was." He doesn't have the time, in truth. All of his time is dedicated to Rocket's goals in other ways, what little free time he manages to find reserved for outings such as this, or time spent with his husband. "I don't regret it, however."[break][break]

His scarred index finger lazily traces the rim of his glass.[break][break]

"Do you miss anything about before?"[break][break]

He glances at her only briefly before returning his gaze to their surroundings, giving her time to contemplate away from the weight of his stare.

"If there's any justice in this world, Kalos will burn next," she muttered darkly, moving to clink her drink against his and mutually drink to the downfall of both their home regions.[break][break]

What little love she held for that land had died with both of her parents, a long time ago.[break][break]

Cillian Quinn rarely spoke of his own home, and when he had, there was an unmistakable pain and anger that threaded through the words. She understood it as an echo of her own, whether or not she understood his own reasons; they were, of course, undoubtedly far different from her own.[break][break]

He never seemed to long for Galar, the way she sometimes longed for other things she had lost.[break][break]

His question took her aback for that reason, although it was a natural returning of what she had herself posed to him but moments prior. When reflected back to her, the notion seemed to look alien and strange, and she frowned as she considered this mirroring in full.[break][break]

"I don't know that there's anything left to miss," she admitted finally, fingers curling about her glass. "I miss a time that I don't think exists anymore. I visited my hometown, and... It is no longer what it was."[break][break]

I am no longer who I was, was her unspoken explanation why.[break][break]

"I miss good wine," she said at last, and her mouth forced itself into a crooked smile. "You can't truly find it outside of Kalos."

It seemed Elisabeth bore no warmth toward the land of her birth. Gavin's smile is grim, and perhaps a little sad.[break][break]

"Should Rocket succeed in our conquest of Hoenn, perhaps you'll get such a wish someday." A dark reality of their criminal connections. He had no wish to see any region burn as Kanto had, but war seemed an inevitability.[break][break]

It is no longer what it was.[break][break]

Would he feel the same upon setting foot in the cold, stony streets of Circhester? The thought troubles him more than he expects.[break][break]

Her mention of wine sees his lip quirk.[break][break]

"Perhaps we out to request some smuggled by our connections in the region, then."[break][break]

He knew how she felt, in a sense. He could not enjoy Scotch quite so much as when it was the brand local to the region of his birth.[break][break]

After a pause, he admits, "I miss the mountains. Chimney, Pyre... they are too different from what I knew." She is a very dear friend to him, and so Gavin admits, "I grew up in Circhester. It's always snowing, there. The mountains are a terrible climb, but lovely at their peaks. I used to go snowboarding in college."[break][break]

His sigh is wistful, echoed in his glass.

Was burning down Kalos a wish she truly held? Part of her wondered.[break][break]

"I don't know," she said at length. "It has been my experience that burning things to ash isn't as satisfying as you imagine it will be."[break][break]

A finger traced the rim of her glass as she contemplated this, the gnawing nothingness that had filled her at the sight of that manor's ruin as palpable now as it was back them.[break][break]

"I've rarely seen the mountains," Elisabeth said then, gratefully taking the opportunity to focus on other things. "I can picture it suiting you. Snowboarding, even."[break][break]

She allowed herself to imagine what Gavin might have been like in those years, and to her frustration, she found she couldn't. That part of his life was so far removed from her knowledge of him. Though there were glimpses of that man, here and there, in the way he playfully suggested smuggling wine in on her behalf.[break][break]

"I never finished college," she admitted suddenly. "I liked what little I experienced, though."

Though not intoxicated from drink, Elisabeth's words still seem to sober Gavin as he glances away.[break][break]

After a pause, he looks back with a smile devoid of warmth. It's a sad, knowing thing.[break][break]

"It has been mine, as well."[break][break]

He had not wanted to see Kanto burn, but he'd hoped for some relief when it was over. Instead, their conquest had brought him only nightmares. Hoenn will not be the same.[break][break]

Was it determination, or mere hope?[break][break]

He's glad to think instead of the snow, of the cold. The absence of flames.[break][break]

"I thought you'd went back?" His brow furrows. "Or did that not pan out, with the meteor?" He remembered that Ceri Glynn had told him of the meteor's impact on class schedules and availability. "I imagine you could finish it regardless, now."[break][break]

She struck him as a very smart, driven woman.

She leaned forward against the counter, a slight shrug rippling through her shoulders.[break][break]

"A few classes, yes. Enough to get something for my efforts. It's taking awhile for my Kalosian courses to transfer over. The different names caused some confusion at the Slateport University office."[break][break]

Lisa Bortiforte and Elisabeth Fiorelli, for all she tried to avoid it, were one and the same woman.[break][break]

"It's different, I think, going back at my age. I have nothing in common with the people in classes with me. I remember... it used to be easier to belong, if that makes sense."[break][break]

Which had been why her husband had denied her that small pleasure, in the end. She'd suspected at the time, and now believed entirely, that he'd planned some of their fights to coincide before important tests and deadlines. Sabotaging her, little by little, until finally she had no choice but to surrender that dream.[break][break]

"Do you have anything like that? A dream deferred, I mean."
